Edward Birt - Founder

Ed Birt is a Wollongong local and a lifelong cyclist.  Ed came to ultra cycling in 2021 at the tender age of 50 when he took on the Indian Pacific Wheel Ride, the epic 5,500km self-supported ride across Australia.

Ed's Story

Ed believes that Aussies and international visitors alike should be able to experience the magnificence and natural beauty of Australia by cycling. 

 

Ed has created The Great Southeastern Loop for adventurers looking for an unforgettable brevet style ultra cycling experience with a focus on planning, design and preparation to enhance safety and access on the best possible route.

​Ed is an experienced ultra cyclist and has participated in a number of unsupported ultra cycling events himself and brings his experience and passion for cycling and his lived experience of ultra cycling in Australia and internationally to create an unforgettable challenge for participants in The Great Southeastern Loop. 

​

As the first Bicycle Mayor of Wollongong, the President of the Illawarra Bicycle Users Group  and the founder of CycleAbility Ed lives and breathes cycling. 

 

Ed’s beloved bicycle is his main mode of transportation and his mission is to share his passion for this inclusive and rewarding mode of travel with as many people as he can – be it to get to school, to work or the local shops or to undertake a challenge like The Great Southeastern Loop.
